Description: Bent of the River is a 700-acre Audubon Center easily accessible from Interstate-84. The Pomperaug River flows through the Center grounds for about a mile before emptying into the Housatonic River just downstream, and an unusual variety of ancient geologic and glacial formations combine to form an extraordinary mix of habitats in a relatively small area. Bald Eagles hunt along the River and are frequently seen here. Fifteen miles of trails wind through a mosaic of rolling meadows, old fields and other transitional habitats, verdant wetlands, including eight vernal pools, and a diverse mix of un-fragmented forest types. The Center is housed in an historic barn on the grounds, and the grounds are open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset.
History: Taft groups help at the Audubon Center each year on Community Service Day.

We intervene on the behalf of suffering equines by providing relief, recovery, shelter and rehabilitation. Once a horse is physically and mentally rehabilitated, we then begin the process of seeking an adoptive home. All prospective adoptive homes are carefully screened. And, we require a contract which guarantees that the horse shall not be bred or sold. It is a lifetime commitment.

is a non-profit organization established to enhance the quality of life for residents in long-term care facilities by providing increased human contact and social activities through volunteer programs. As the population of Connecticut ages, more and more of its residents are spending longer periods of time in nursing facilities. Dr. Richard Silverman, a pulmonologist and founder of the Foundation realized, while working in area nursing facilities, that the first budget cuts always affect the recreation department. Dr. Silverman has made a commitment to finding areas of interest to these residents and providing them with personalized sources of stimulation. His vision is accomplished through volunteers who visit nursing homes on a regular basis and through donations of recreational supplies.

Description: This brook begins in the northern reaches of Watertown and flows south to the Naugatuck River in Waterbury. The establishment of the Steele Brook Greenway from Watertown to Oakville is the first step in getting citizens access to the brook which is an important community water resource providing active and passive recreation. The Town also obtained an America the Beautiful Grant that will be utilized to plant specimen trees and create a “Heritage Trail”. A goal is to connect to the Naugatuck River Greenway and provide other links throughout Watertown.

Description: "I have been a member of Taft’s volunteer council for two years and a member of the volunteer council board for one year. Of the activities I participate in at Taft, the volunteer council is my favorite. At Taft, students can easily forget the surrounding community, but the volunteer council provides fun and simple ways to give back. The volunteer council’s impact, however, is not limited to local organizations and families. The volunteer council organizes fund-raisers, blood drives, and walks that help people in need all over the world. The council advocates awareness on a both a local and global scale and encourages Taft students to look beyond themselves, ask how they can utilize the opportunities they have been given to help others, and embody the school’s motto: Not to Be Served, But to Serve." -Hope Gimbel

Description: The Greater Waterbury YMCA, and all its branches, is characterized by principles and practices which acknowledge that diversity encompasses all races, gender, color, religion, ethnic origin, lifestyles, physical/mental ability, age, economic status and other cultural differences.
The YMCA is a membership organization open to all people. We welcome women and men, girls and boys of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, abilities and financial circumstances. YMCA programs and branches embrace diversity, reflecting the needs and composition of the community we serve.
History: The Greater Waterbury YMCA has been a cornerstone of our community, particularly downtown, since 1858, when it was first organized in Lang's Building on Bank Street. As with other YMCAs around the world, the Greater Waterbury YMCA was originally founded as a religious organization for young men to escape the perils of city life during the industrial revolution, as well as provide spiritual support for soldiers and veterans of our country's earliest wars.
The YMCA moved to its current location at 136 West Main Street in 1892, and over the years, both the facility and scope of programming has expanded to meet the needs of greater Waterbury citizens. To date, the facility itself has housed a cafeteria, bowling allies, a barber shop, classrooms for the University of Connecticut, and single residency apartments. The YMCA today includes two swimming pools, a large health & wellness center, a child development center, group health & wellness studio, racquetball courts, and countless other amenities for various programs.

Description: The Watertown Food Bank collects donations of food and money to buy food to distribute to those in need. The food bank is often in need of volunteers to collect food from contributors who are unable to bring their donations to the bank themselves and volunteers to organize the food on the shelves of the bank. The Watertown Food Bank works to eliminate hunger and improve living conditions for those in need. There are also various opportunities to raise money for the Food Bank, as it is always in need. For more information on how to do this, contact Baba Frew.

Description: This is a volunteer organization at the Greater Waterbury YMCA. The organization says volunteers are vital to the success of the YMCA. At the camp they build strong kids and teach them valuable lessons about life: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Care. At the camp they look for some committed volunteers to help out with workdays at both of the YMCA camps. Friends of YMCA Camp Mataucha and Friends of Camp Oakasha will meet monthly for a Saturday morning work group from 8am-12pm. The focus of the work groups is the continued improvement of the camp facilities for the Greater Waterbury YMCA service area.
